Soothing the Wandering Wind: A Rewilded Rhythms™ Approach to Seasonal Balance
August 2025 Blog

As summer's warmth begins to wane, we slowly shift into the cooler, drier rhythm of fall — known in Ayurveda as Vata season. Governed by the elements of air and space, this time of year brings a sense of movement and lightness that can be both invigorating and destabilizing.

In our own work, we call this the time when Wandering Wind rhythms often emerge — sleep becomes scattered, thoughts drift faster than we can ground them, and the body feels a little less anchored than usual.

When left unchecked, the rise of Vata (and Wandering Wind) can manifest in a variety of ways: dry skin, sluggish digestion, restless sleep, sore throats, and a general sense of being “all over the place.”

To stay balanced through the shift, it’s essential to adjust our routines and root into practices that nourish, ground, and align us with nature’s changing pace. Here are a few simple ways to support yourself this season:

Nourish Your Skin & Throat

As the air dries out, so do our tissues — especially the skin and throat. This is a season to hydrate deeply, both inside and out.

  • Focus on warm, cooked meals rich in healthy fats like ghee or sesame oil.

  • Embrace root vegetables, soft grains, and warming spices such as cinnamon, cardamom, and ginger.

  • Add soothing herbs like marshmallow root and slippery elm to your tea rotation to calm irritated tissues.

  • Licorice is another Ayurvedic ally — sweet, cooling, and deeply restoring to the throat and digestive tract.

Support Your Digestion

Vata’s airy nature — like the Wandering Wind — can disrupt digestion, leading to bloating, irregularity, or a sense of internal dryness.

  • Start your morning with warm lemon water or digestive herbal teas to kindle agni (digestive fire).

  • Incorporate abhyanga (warm oil massage) into your daily rhythm — a beloved Vata-balancing practice that hydrates the skin, calms the nerves, and supports elimination.

  • Keep your meals regular, unrushed, and grounding — this consistency is medicine in itself.

Prepare for the Seasonal Transition

As daylight shortens and winds pick up, now is the time to gently slow down and re-center.

  • Choose grounding movement like slow yoga, walking, or restorative stretches.

  • Prioritize consistent sleep and bedtime rituals to help the nervous system settle.

  • Let go of cold, raw meals in favor of warm stews, soups, and teas that offer nourishment and stability.
